Is It Time To Start Double Cleansing

Cleansing has always been the basis of any good skin care regime, with an increasing number of people ditching the dreaded make-up wipes (finally!). At the end of a long day, nothing beats the simple joy of a freshly cleansed face, but now the trend of double cleansing allows you to experience that feeling twice over.

What is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing is the latest skin care trend that is here to stay. Far from being a beauty gimmick, this technique of using two different types of cleanser each time you wash your face is loved by skin care gurus the world over. Expert facialist and skin care blogger, Caroline Hirons, preaches the mantra, ‘If you've spent time putting it on, then take time taking it off'. This applies to everything from make-up to SPF, both of which can disrupt the healthy balance of your skin, if not removed properly.

Thoroughly removing make-up and daily grime helps to keep your skin healthy, un-block pores and improve the absorption of your serums, moisturisers and oils. For those who don’t wear make-up or daily SPF protection, a single cleanse may be working just fine for you, however if you are a make-up lover or devoted facial sun lotion wearer, double cleansing might be one for you to try.

How do you Double Cleanse?

Step 1: oil-based cleanse
The most effective way to double cleanse is to start by using an oil-based cleanser, such as Green People’s Age Defy+ Cleanse & Soothe Balm. An oil or balm cleanser breaks down make-up and melts away impurities, while helping to soothe and nourish any dry patches. Those with oily skin needn’t fear using an oil-based cleanser, as applying a good quality, natural balm to your skin helps to balance sebum levels and prevent your skin from overproducing oil.

Apply a small amount of balm to dry skin and massage in small circular motions over the entire face and neck. As the balm warms it transforms into a nourishing oil that can also be used to remove waterproof eye make-up. Once you have worked the balm into your skin, splash a small amount of warm water onto your face and remove the cleanser with a clean, damp muslin cloth.

Step 2: water-based cleanse
The final step in your double cleanse regime is to use a water-based cleanser, such as Gentle Cleanse & Make-up Remover - a light and balancing cream cleanser, or Foaming Face Wash - ideal for acne-prone skin. While your skin is still damp, apply one pump of your chosen water-based cleanser and repeat the process used in your first cleanse. This step helps to remove any residue left by the balm or oil and penetrates deeper into your pores to remove built-up grime and impurities, which may have been missed in your first cleanse.

We recommend choosing good quality, certified organic cleansers that are free from SLS, alcohol denat and mineral oil, as these ingredients can strip your skin and lead to dryness, irritation and inflammation.
